IndigoStyle Vintage
You know those women with seemingly effortless personal style — the ones who layer eclectic pieces and accessories, mixing high-end garments with Jordans, taking risks and breaking rules yet always pulling it off? Sheryl Roberts, owner of IndigoStyle Vintage, is that type.
It’s unsurprising, considering her work as a model for nearly 30 years (she’s appeared on the cover of Ebony and Essence magazines, in addition to being the face of campaigns for Clairol, L’Oreal and Black Opal). But the Fort Worth, Texas native says her appreciation for beautiful clothes comes from her mother, who runs her own antiques business and brought Roberts along to estate sales as a child.
“About five years ago I decided I wanted to start transitioning out of modeling,” says Roberts, 50, who started with a monthly showroom in her Bed-Stuy home. “Some people sell clothes, but I know clothes.”
A visit to IndigoStyle Vintage, located inside the gift and home design store Peace & Riot (scroll down for our review), feels a bit like a well organized treasure hunt. With a keen eye for quality items that pop, Roberts keeps the boutique stocked with eye-catching statement pieces.
“I try to do fashion-forward vintage, versus concentrating on period vintage,” she says, adding that, while vintage generally runs small, IndigoStyle offers a range of sizes from zero to 18. “Everything that I carry is with a particular person in mind. Everything isn’t for everybody, but there’s something for everybody. You’re going to leave here confident, with a great piece that you’ll get lots of compliments on.”

You might be thinking: “I’m feeling this vibe, but...I wouldn’t know how to wear any of it.” Roberts encourages you to be open and roll through.
“When you come to IndigoStyle Vintage, it's like shopping with a really good friend that you trust,” she says. “You'll always find someone who will give you an honest opinion and help you look your best.” In addition to secondhand finds, IndigoStyle Vintage sells graphic tees by Black-owned brand Mess in a Bottle with self-assured slogans: “Brooklyn Girls Do It Better,” for one, and “Keep Creating Dope Ass Shit ‘Til Someone Notices.”
No matter your aesthetic, Roberts is here to help. “My goal is to help you find beautiful pieces that you love, that fit you and are well made.”
